I was lucky enough to attend the launch of the Winter dinner menu at West of Kin this week. What there was: an array of incredible modern fusion Pan-Asian dishes. What there was not: a shortage of food / aesthetics / good vibes…

West of Kin is set in a heritage listed building in Melbourne’s West. The interior design involves a stark contrast between the old factory style building and the modern elegant interior they have sourced literally from around the world. It’s aesthetically pleasing, without being predictable. Marble is nice, but I don’t need my entire Instagram feed to look like an ancient Greek sculpture. A replica obviously, cafes are yet to catch onto the broken marble look. I hope they never do to be honest as that would be kind of dangerous to eat on.

The friendly and welcoming vibes at West of Kin were a very refreshing compliment to the elegance of the restaurant. There’s nothing worse than turning up in a pink fairy floss-inspired coat and oversized pompom earrings and feeling judged for not coming in your Gucci slippers (no, not the fluffy ones obviously) and Chanel handbag (believe me if I owned these I would have, but that’s not the point). West of Kin understands that a fine dining experience should not ever make you feel intimidated or inadequate, but quite the opposite. Instead, we were welcomed on a journey through Asia, tasting exquisite combinations of flavours in exquisitely arranged structures. I’m honestly surprised we ever even got to eating the food given how photogenic the dishes were.

If you’re a fan of Asian food (if you’re not you need to re-evaluate your life) and keen for a fine dining experience paired with good vibes, head to West of Kin – 17 Lacy St, Braybrook.

Abalone congee, fried shallot, fried garlic, XO and master stock egg – as a fan of porridge, I was not disappointed. I’d also never tried abalone before, so I felt pretty fancy.

Cho-gochu-jang ceviche king fish, avruga caviar, almond cream, quail egg yolk, sea cucumber, ice plant, kelp infused oil.

Summer kimchi, trace of nashi pear & pistachio – Kimchi with a hit that doesn’t blow your tongue off (AKA the perfect amount of spice). There’s nothing worse than food so spicy that you spend the entire meal overheating and unable to taste anything because your taste buds were spiced off.

Processed with VSCO with s3 presetImitation squid ink cannelloni, prawn and squid filling, wasabi, smoked yoghurt, viola, sesame & yuzu granita – I am a fan of any kind of cannelloni and am entirely non-discriminatory towards either seafood or pasta varieties.

For those who prefer to steer clear of anything animal-like, the mushroom and baby corn was an incredible vegan dish – if I was eating at West of Kin for every meal I wouldn’t even mind being vegan. Except for feta, I couldn’t do it without feta, but that’s understandable right? For those who like seafood – this whole flounder is the way to go.

One of the desserts we tried was this stunning chocolate mousse – I could have eaten about 10 of these to myself.
